Caracas Polo wins 22-goal Gold Cup

with 10-8 win in finals

Victor Vargas’s Caracas Polo team (Victor Vargas, Alfredo Vargas, Juan Martin Nero

and Martin Espain) took top honors in the Venezuelan 22-goal Gold Cup Saturday

afternoon at the Caracas Polo Club in the northern coastal village of Tucacas on the

strength of a 10-8 win over Sebucan (Gonzalo Mendoza, Sebastian Harriot, Pablo

Jauretche and Toto Urturi).

The Caracas Polo team went through the tournament undefeated with an impressive

6-0 record in the two week long tournament. Sebucan entered the contest with 3-

2 record, and having previously lost to Caracas Polo 8-5 in the first weekend of the

tournament.

Los Samanes II (Luis Eduardo, Toto Collardin, Juan Brane and Andres James) took

third place honors in a narrow 7-6 win over Mindanao (Jaime Restrepo, Tomas Franco,

Santiago Cernadas and Jose Villamil). Los Samanes evened their record at 3-3 with

the win while Mindanao’s record fell to 2-4.

Los Samanes (Carlos Silva, Facundo Castagnola, Agustin Canale and Marcelo

Frayssinet) finished in fifth place in the six team tournament with a 10-9 win over Eliet

Polo (Elias Celis, Jose Rivas, Juan Harriot and Julia Diaz). Samanes elevated their

record to an even 3-3. Eliette suffered their fifth loss in six outings for a dismal 11-5

record.

Victor Vargas is responsible for the creation of a high goal polo season in Venezuela.

A regular at the International Polo Club in Wellington with his Lechuza Caracas team,

Vargas is also a familiar face in England, here he played many a high-goal season as

well as at Spain’s Santa Maria Polo Club at Sotogrande.
