HB Polo and Dubai score wins in Hublot Gold Cup play in Spain
Dubai (Martín Valent, Patricio Cieza, Luis Domecq and Adolfo Cambiaso) and HB Polo (Ludovic Pailloncy, Sebastian Pailloncy, Ignacio Toccalino and Pite Merlos) started the last high-goal tournament of the season, the Hublot Gold Cup, at Sotogrande’s Santa Maria Polo Club Monday afternoon with Dubai scoring a 9-7 win over Halcyon Gallery (Charley Hanbury, Jota Chavanne, Guillermo Terrera and Max Routledge) while HB Polo downed Scapa (Michael Redding, Jack Richardson, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Marcos De Paola) in a 10-7 meeting later in the day.
Adolfo Cambiaso and his Dubai teammates took Spain by storm as they captured the high-goal season opening Bronze Cup title in a 12-9 win over Scapa. Scapa returned the favor in Dubai’s opening game of the Silver Cup in a 9-7 decision and making their way to the semifinals before losing to the eventual winner, Ellerston, 11-9.
After a sub-par performance in Silver Cup play, Dubai opened Hublot Gold Cup play with a 9-7 win over Silver Cup finalist Halcyon Gallery.
Things should heat up this week with Dubai (1-0) meeting Scapa (0-1) on Thursday in their first head-on-head meeting since the finals of the high-goal Bronze Cup earlier in the season. HB Polo (1-0) will face Halcyon Gallery (0-1) for the first time in the earlier game. HB Polo will be looking to extend their winning streak while Halcyon Gallery will try to stop the skid and register their first win of the tournament.
Tuesday action will lead off with Silver Cup Champion Ellerston (Johnny Williams, Ali Patterson, Gonzalo Pieres and Facundo Pieres) facing El Rosario (Alejandro Penafiel, Valerio Zubiaurre, Milo Fernandez and Salvador Ulloa). Although El Rosario lost all three of their Silver Cup matches, the powerful Ellerston team edged them in a narrow 11-10 win. Ayala (Inigo Zobel, Guillermo Willington, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Jauretche) will be meeting Royal Salute (Petrus Fernandini, Alejandro Muzzio, Jaime Huidobro and Malcolm Borwick) for the first time this year while (HH Sheikha Maitha Al Maktoum, Jack Richardson, Lucas Monteverde and Pablo MacDonough) will try to score another win over Dos Lunas (A Sainzde Vicuna, Jason Warren, Diego Cavanagh and Tomas Garcia Del Rio), a team they beat in Silver Cup play by six goals, 16-10.
