Santa Clara rebounds to defeat The Four Seasons13-10
The Four Seasons (Kaisser Maakar, Mason Wroe, Carlitos Gracida and Luis Escobar) had their way with Santa Clara (Francisco Escobar, Alejandro Gonzalez Jr., Kris Kampsen and Malcolm Borwick) in the first half of play in the 14-goal Freebooters Classic at the International Polo Club, but a five goal fifth chukker by Santa Clara put an end to their domination as they fell 13-10 in the Sunday morning contest.
The Four Seasons received one goal by handicap from the 14-goalSanta Clara lineup, and quickly went to 2-0 on a goal from the field from Mason Wroe. Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. responded with a goal for Santa Clara to end the chukker trailing The Four Seasons, 2-1.
Wroe’s second goal f the day had the Four Seasons on top, 3-1, but it only served to stir the Santa Clara attack. Single goals from Francisco Escobar and Kris Kampsen had it all even at 3-3 at the end of the second period.
English 6-goaler Malcolm Borwick gave Santa Clara a 4-3 advantage with the opening goal of the third. Luis Escobar tied it up at 4-4 on a 60-yard penalty conversion and Carlitos Gracida ended the chukker with a goal from the field for the 5-4 halftime lead.
Both offenses ramped it up in the second half with Santa Clara and The Four Seasons scoring three goals apiece. Santa Clara got two penalty goals from Borwick and a goal from the field from Kris Kampsen. All three Four Season goals came from the field with Luis Escobar scoring twice and Carlitos Gracida adding a single goal to maintain the one goal 8-7 advantage.
The fifth chukker was all Santa Clara, however, as they outscored The Four Seasons 5-1 and moved in front, 12-9. Gonzalez and Borwick scored two goals each with Kampsen adding a goal for Santa Clara. Wroe scored the only goal of the chukker for The Four Seasons, who trailed by three goals for the first time all day.
Santa Clara’s defense dug in in the sixth, with Kampsen scoring his fourth goal of the match for a 13-9 lead. The Four Seasons got a final penalty goal from Luis Escobar in the 13-10 loss.
Borwick led all scoring with five goals (three on penalty shots). Kampsen was credited with four goals; Gonzalez scored three times with Francisco Escobar adding a goal for the win. Luis Escobar led The Four Seasons with four goals. Wroe scored three times and Gracida added two goals in a losing effort.
The 14-goal Freebooters Classic will continue with a Wednesday match between Goose (1-1) Creek and The Four Seasons (1-2) followed by a Friday match between Santa Clara (2-1) and Goose Creek (1-1).
